Head lice is highly contagious, so it is very important to take the proper steps to getting rid of the problem. Treating head lice starts with a complete and thorough washing of all bedding materials including sheets, stuffed animals, pillowcases and blankets in extremely hot, soapy water. All materials which may have had contact with the person who has lice should be disinfected in ammonia or rubbing alcohol. This includes hair brushes, combs, hair bands, hats and barrettes.
When lice are first discovered on either your head or some one else’s you should purchase a lice treatment product at a drug store and use it as product instructions recommend. You should wash and clean your sheets and other household items. Because an adult louse can jump from head to head and quickly spread edges, it is critical to follow these steps immediately.
Shampoos can be effective in the treatment of head lice, but may require more than one treatment to eliminate the pest completely. Your doctor might prescribe a product, or you could ask your pharmacist for a recommendation, but these shampoos can be purchased over the counter as well. It takes some effort, but just follow the directions and you’ll kill the lice.
If you still have lice after a week, follow these steps. First, continue using the lice shampoo. Second, rewash all of your bedding. Third, steam-clean any rugs or carpets in your home. If the problem persists, visit your doctor to get further help. Your doctor can give you more information about how to kill the head lice, including recommendations for stronger medicines or an even more vigorous cleaning schedule.
Head lice and body lice infestation is quite common throughout the world and is not something to be ashamed of. It is more frequently found amongst young children who will share toys, hats, pillows and other items, particularly in the public school system.
