Lice infestations may be found in human hair or clothing. These tiny parasites attach very strongly to human hair where they deposit their nits, or eggs, on the hair shafts. Three kinds of lice are known to attach themselves to humans, and the pests feed on scalp blood.

Anybody who has lice wants to get rid of it. Removing nits is the most important action to take. Nits need warmth and high humidity to develop properly. They will die without it. Human skin provides the warmth and high humidity they need to grow. Therefore, nit control is imperative to effective lice control. Lice combs can be used to crush the nits in place. Using nit-loosening lotions can remove the nits without pulling out hair.

Young lice have a life span of 30 days and they leave behind the empty egg shell attached to the hair shaft when they hatch. For weeks or months, these empty shells can remain attached to the hair. The empty shell moves further and further from the skin surface as the hair grows. Nits are found further than about a 1/4″ away from the skin. They are already hatched or are dead when found.

You can distinguish live nits from empty shells by their color. The live ones are darker in color. The empty shells are white. A female louse can lay about six eggs per day during the ten days after it matures. This totals sixty eggs per female louse. The female louse uses a natural glue to attach one egg to a single strand of hair.

Upon discovery of hair lice, people are often filled with uncertainty about their cleanliness. However, there is no need for one to feel this way. The mites can live anywhere, on any surface that contains even minute traces of blood. Once present, they migrate to the head, particularly around the back of the ears and neck.

An effective lice treatment is a specially designed lice shampoo. Another good way to remove nits is with a lice comb. Using effective lice treatment is very important. You should look for head lice when your hair is damp. Some items you will need are a fine-toothed comb, scotch tape, a magnifying glass, and a bright light.

Anybody who has hair lice wants to get rid of it, of course. Using a specially formulated shampoo is the most important and effective lice treatment. Nits are the eggs of lice that are strongly attached to the hair with a strong glue, so you need to take additional steps to remove them. Live ones are dark while the empty shells appear whiter. One of the most effective ways is removing them with a lice comb. Search for lice when the hair is wet by using a fine-toothed lice comb, clear tape, a magnifying glass and a strong light.
