Rhinoplasty, more commonly known as a nose job, is a operation that will alter the shape or usage of the nose. The word itself has its roots in the Greek words rhinos, meaning “nose” and plastikos, meaning “to shape.” It is performed by a plastic, oral, maxillofacial, or an ENF (ear, nose and throat) surgeon. Like most plastic surgeries, it is growing in popularity.

It is a little-known fact that rhinoplasty has been performed for centuries. The Indian sugeon Sushruta and his students developed a technique for cosmetic surgery on the nose known as forehead flap rhinoplasty about 500 BC. His method is still used, with hardly any changes, today. By contrast, the intranasal surgery, another common rhinoplasty method, was first performed in the West in 1887.

Many facial procedures, including the nose job, became prevalent after WWI. Many of soldiers had suffered facial injuries during the battles and needed reconstructive surgery to help ease them back into civilian life. Since that time facial procedures have continued to improve becoming top quality as well as much more safe. The popularity of these procedures has grown too. A nose job is now one of the popular surgical operations available.

In fact, it is routinely done to improve the quality of life for people who have difficulty breathing or other problems regarding their nose. People automatically link thoughts of Plastic Surgery to women. However, cosmetic surgery, including rhinoplasty, is becoming more common among men, too. Although females still get more procedures on their noses than men by a ratio of almost 3 to 1, cosmetic surgeries among men are definitely on the rise.

Don’t trust your face to just anyone. Before deciding on rhinoplasty, you’ll want to find a cosmetic surgeon who has successfully performed the operation many times and who has established a great name for themselves in the field. Ask a lot of questions and make sure you’re content with the responses. This is a common operation and nothing to be scared of, but it doesn’t hurt to do a little research beforehand. Just ask the many happy people who are enjoying their new appearance!
