Whenever we watch gymnasts competing for fame and glory, we just see the body and the muscles resulting from months or even years of dedicated practice and training. But do people ever dwell on the equipment that these athletes use for practice, and even during competition? It’s a sure bet we don’t. That’s because people don’t think that the equipment is necessary and essential as the aspects of training that any athlete undergoes.

Think about it for a moment: Any athlete must possess the highest level of confidence in the equipment that he uses, whether it’s a boxing glove or balance beam. Without that confidence, he cannot develop the skills he needs. I truly believe that any serious-minded athlete, whether amateur or professional, cannot improve his abilities to perfection if he has the slightest hesitation in anything and anyone that is involved in his training.

If you’re not convinced, examine the situation as if you were the athlete. Imagine that you must grip the bars, execute the moves as flawlessly as you can, and then make a soft, balanced landing. All this in just under a minute. But you’re afraid because you know someone who injured himself due to faulty equipment.

An athlete must be able to completely trust his skills and believe that he is absolutely capable of executing a maneuver perfectly and accurately. You don’t have to be an athlete to realize that faulty equipment can actually mean life and death, or if the brakes on your car are defective.

We need to be sure that the equipment we use is reliable and safe, so we need to make sure that the equipment and tools we use will function correctly and not disintegrate in a critical moment. Just ask any airplane pilot. They make it their duty to double-check their gear before each and every trip. They check and double-check each piece of equipment before flight. It’s routine for them, because the lives of each passenger on their flight depend not only on their training, but on the dependability of the equipment that they are using.

If you’re a coach or a trainer, you know that safety is of the highest priority. This is the reason why you need to make sure that you use only the best equipment available. Having high quality equipment for your athletes allows better performance for everyone involved, not merely in sports, but in life as well.
